Gay activist and founder of a chapter of the Mattachine Society, Jack Nichols was heavily involved in various aspects of the gay rights movement, from organizing the first pro-gay picket at the White House in 1965 to co-editing the country’s first weekly gay newspaper (alongside his partner, Lige Clark). An early example of gay writing, still uncommon at the time, "Welcome To Fire Island" showcases a simpler time when both communities of Cherry Grove and The Pines were still finding their identities. All in all, a unique, humorous portrayal of summers in Cherry Grove and the Pines in the 60's and 70's, with photographs by Steven Yates throughout.
