Originally published in 1938, while Fuller was just over 40 years of age, and presents his history of technology as well as laying out his myriad ideas on space, humanity, technology and survival.
The title refers to his observation that if the world's population (in the year of publication) were to stand atop one another, they could form chains that would reach to the Moon and back nine times.
