Early Photographs 1977-1979

Richard Prince

Skarstedt Fine Art, New York, 2001. - Oblong 4to. [48] pp. Published to coincide with an exhibition of the same name at Skarstedt Fine Art, New York, held from February 21 April 20, 2001. This book assembles together the photographs that initiated Prince's exploration of "authorship" and "the original," ideas that were prevalent in the critical discourse of the late 70s, and are perhaps even more so today. In 1977 Richard Prince was working for Time Life, clipping articles from magazines for staff writers. The artist began rephotographing existing images from ads and calling them his own, excising out all identifying text or logos, cropping and enlarging images, rephotographing black-and-white photos in color and vice versa. In Near Fine condition with no noticeable wear to boards. Interior clean and bright.
